What is now North Dumfries originally formed the north half of Dumfries Township, hence the current name. With the introduction of the county system in the mid-nineteenth century, Dumfries was split between the new Waterloo and Brant Counties. The remaining southern half of the old Dumfries Township is now South Dumfries in Brant County.
The name Ayr was first used in 1840 when it was assigned to the post office. The territory in this area, eventually to be the township of North Dumfries, consisting of 94,305 acres, had been sold to Philip Stedman in 1798 from Joseph Brant of the Six Nations.
Branciforte County was the original name of Santa Cruz County in 1850. The reference was to the 1797 town of Branciforte. Klamath County was created in 1851 from the northern half of Trinity County. Part of the county's territory went to Del Norte County in 1857, and in 1874 the remainder was divided between Humboldt and Siskiyou counties.

The federal electoral district was created in 1976 and consisted of the city of Cambridge and the Township of North Dumfries. In 1987, part of the city of Kitchener was added to the district. In 1996, the boundaries were redrawn again to include a slightly different section of Kitchener.
