Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the U.S. In terms of area covered, the largest lake in California is the Salton Sea, a lake formed in 1905 which is now saline.It occupies 376 square miles (970 km 2) in the southeast corner of the state, but because it is shallow it only holds about 7.5 million acre⋅ft (2.4 trillion US gal; 9.3 trillion L) of water. California State Parks administers 279 separate park units on 1.4 million acres (5,700 km 2), with over 280 miles (450 km) of California coastline; 625 miles (1,006 km) of lake and river frontage; nearly 15,000 campsites; and 3,000 miles (4,800 km) of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails.
It consists of two reservoirs: Folsom and Natoma. About 2 million people visit the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area every year. Generally, Folsom Lake State Recreation Area experiences hot summers and mild winters. Campgrounds in the area consist of the Peninsula Campground, Beals Point Campground, Black Miners Bar, and Avery's Pond.

Lake Cuyamaca is a recreation area operated by the Lake Cuyamaca Recreation and Park District and the Helix Water District. It offers boating, fishing, picnicking, birdwatching, hiking, wedding and party venues, cabin rentals and camping. A store, restaurant, pub, and tackle shop are onsite, as well as boat rentals.
