I think the half mile standard probably still applies to the average suburban dweller for walking to a Metra station. A half mile in the City is the same distance as a half mile in a suburb. Unfortunately, there are usually by far fewer dwellings within a half mile to a transit stop in an average suburb than in an average City neighborhood.

What I like about my definition is that it takes a lot of the emotion out of the definition, and it also takes away all the exceptions the "committed urbanists" as one person called himself, come up with; as I said earlier, the streetcar suburbs, the pre-war suburbs (funny how we call them that when the war in question ended 67 years ago), the ...

They might have urban blocks and pockets however 95% of the city is suburban. This should strictly be the textbook definition. Exurbs are in counties which border the "core suburban" counties. Obviously these definitions are not perfect. For example, under such a definition Chester County in Southeastern Pennsylvania would be exurban. In truth some areas (Berwyn, Paoli, Malvern, etc) have been railroad suburbs for around a century.

hah. I also think that some "antiurbanists" like to minimize the support of fellow suburbanites (and of revenue hungry suburban govts) for urbanism, because they prefer the narrative of "urbanism" as an imposition by elites - either by outsiders, or by the "elitist" professional planners at the suburban planning and zoning depts.

Only if you have a very suburban definition of "city". If you're just going by city limits, yes the population of San Jose is higher. But going by city limits makes no sense because they are much different land areas. Pittsburgh is far more urban and has a larger urban core.
