Kings County Hospital was born of necessity, dedicated to caring for the underprivileged of Brooklyn. In 1824, New York State established a law requiring several counties, including the County of Kings (Brooklyn), to purchase lands to be used exclusively to house the poor, deferring all potential real estate taxes which could be levied on the land.
The hospital gained its most distinctive modern feature in 1971 – a tall cylindrical tower with a Modernist design. The 16-story tower was designed with all private rooms, unique in 1971. In 1992, Quorum Health Group purchased it, renaming it Park Medical Center. The Ohio State University (OSU) acquired it for about $13 million in 1999.
In 2005 the affiliation with the NYU Medical Center ceased and the hospital reverted to the name New York Downtown Hospital. Following a full merger in 2013 with New York-Presbyterian Hospital, it was renamed New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital. [7] Staff residence building.
