Blackburn College was established in 1837 and named for the Rev. Gideon Blackburn, a Presbyterian minister who helped raise funds for the school. [4] By 1855, instruction began at the college. Within two years (1857), the school was chartered as "Blackburn Theological Seminary", [ 4 ] and the first unit of University Hall was erected. [ 4 ]

Blackburn University Centre (or BUC) is a higher education institute based in Blackburn, Lancashire, England as part of Blackburn College. University Centre offers degrees, HNC/HNDs and postgraduate courses, each validated by the University of South Wales , the University of Central Lancashire or Lancaster University .
The two further education colleges in the town are Blackburn College and the sixth-form St. Mary's College. The town does not have a university, but some higher education courses for over-18s are provided by the East Lancashire Institute of Higher Education (ELIHE).
