The National Tube Works, operated by the National Tube Company, was a large steel tube foundry located in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. The tube works employed a large amount of the town and were a symbol of the town itself. Its closure in 1987 severely impacted the town's economy and contributed towards its decline.
McKeesport, then part of Versailles Township, began to grow in 1830 when mining of the large deposits of bituminous coal in the region began. The first schoolhouse was built in 1832, with James E. Huey as its schoolmaster. [citation needed] McKeesport was incorporated as a borough in 1842, and the city's first steel mill was established in 1851.
St. Mary's (German) Church was a Roman Catholic church in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, noteworthy for being the only church in the United States built in the early Christian Basilica model. During the 1980s, the church hosted a Broadway -inspired stage show in its parish hall featuring Rev. Tom Smith.
