Clay is an unincorporated community in Franklin Township, Jackson County, Ohio, United States. It is located between Jackson and Oak Hill at the intersection of Ohio State Route 93 and Clay Banner Road/Pyro Road. [2] [3] The Clay Post Office was established on September 10, 1858, and discontinued on August 31, 1912.
Clay Center derives its name from originally being the center of a larger Clay Township. [5] When Ottawa County was founded in 1840, Allen Township did not exist, but was the northern half of a larger Clay Township. When the Townships split in 1888, Clay Center became a part of Allen Township.

The Alliance Clay Product Company was chartered in 1905, as a company for "the purpose of the manufacturing, selling and dealing in brick, paving blocks, building blocks, sewer pipe, drain tile and all kinds of clay product". [2] The buildings themselves were built beginning in 1906, the year the company was founded by James B. Wilcox.
