Southern Methodist College was founded in 1956 as a private Methodist school in Greenville, South Carolina after the Southern Methodist Church saw a need to establish an institution to train its ministers. [1] In 1961, Southern Methodist College had sixty-one students enrolled. [4]
The school changed its name in 1971 to the Sumter Area Technical College; it took its current name in 1992. It received its initial accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1974.
