The club was founded in 1899 as Riverside A.F.C. by members of a local cricket club, before changing to Cardiff City in 1907. They made their debut in the FA Cup in 1912 and were elected into the Football League eight years later in 1920, moving into their new stadium Ninian Park.

He left Torquay in November 1950 to sign for Cardiff City and he became a virtual ever-present in the Cardiff line-up for the next five years, and was one of the club's most popular players during the 1950s before moving to Arsenal in 1955 along with Gordon Nutt in exchange for Brian Walsh.
