The Japan Open was first held in 1972 as a minor ATP event and from 1973 was part of the Grand Prix tennis tour. The Japan Open was known as the "Tokyo Outdoor Grand Prix" between 1973 and 1989. From 1990 it was part of the ATP Tour.
