The hospital has its origins in a small facility at Mill Hole in Burns Street in central Dumfries which opened as the Dumfries Infirmary in 1776. [2] The hospital moved to High Dock in 1778 before becoming the Dumfries and Galloway Infirmary in 1785 and the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary in 1807. [2]

The board was established following the dissolution of several NHS trusts which provided healthcare services in the Dumfries and Galloway area: Dumfries and Galloway Acute and Maternity Hospitals NHS Trust, Dumfries and Galloway Community Health NHS Trust and Dumfries and Galloway Primary Care NHS Trust, all of which were established in the 1990s and dissolved between 1999 and 2003.

The hospital was commissioned to replace the Garrick and Dalrymple hospitals in Stranraer and is located on the site of part of the Dalrymple hospital, adjacent to the Waverley Medical Centre. [1] It opened on a partial basis in September 2006, [2] with the renal unit opening in April 2007. [3]
