Ambattur lake, together with the Korattur lake and the Retteri lake, is an important wildlife refuge in northern and western parts of Chennai.According to the Care Earth Trust, a city-based biodiversity research organisation, nearly 40 bird species are present in these lakes, including common tailorbird, the purple-rumped sunbird, and the migratory Asian openbill stork.
Korattur Aeri is one of a chain of three water bodies, including the Ambattur Aeri and the Madhavaram Aeri, where surplus water from one is transported to another. The water from the lake had been supplied to Chennai residents for a brief period when there was a shortage in the late 1970s.
The lake, which was once a drinking water source for the neighbourhood, now has water for most part of the year and is a haven for birds. Pulhal Lake, or Pulhal aeri, sometimes spelled Puzhal lake and also known as the Red Hills Lake, is located in Red Hills, Chennai, India. It lies in Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu state. It is one of the two rain-fed reservoirs that supply water to Chennai City , the other one being the Chembarambakkam Lake and Porur Lake .
Arakkambakkam is situated in the Ambattur region of Tamil Nadu, approximately 11 kilometers northwest of Chennai. The village covers an area of 1.82 square kilometers with a population of 1402, resulting in a population density of 770 people per square kilometer. The male and female populations are 700 and 702, respectively.
In the first phase of renovation, a walkers' track measuring 4.5 m in width and 520 m in length was constructed around the lake and lighting facility was provided. Locations for children's play area was demarcated and a vacant space of about 20,000 sq ft was earmarked for a new park to be set up at a cost of ₹ 2.5 million in the second phase.
Estimates say that the expanse of water bodies in and around Chennai contracted from 12.6 square kilometers in 1893 to 3.2 square kilometers in 2017. There were about 60 large water bodies in the Chennai area at one time, but as of 2017, they have come down to just 28, most of which are small. [6]
