The NED University of Engineering & Technology, was established on 1 March 1977 under an act of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh after upgrading of the former NED Government Engineering College, which was set up in 1921. The NED University is thus one of the oldest institution in Pakistan for teaching and producing Engineering graduates.
Prime Minister of Pakistan Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani announced the establishment of Women University during his visit to Sukkur on January 11, 2009. Sindh government decided to name the Women University after former First Lady of Pakistan, so a bill in this regard was drafted and forwarded to Law department for establishing "Begum Nusrat Bhutto Women University" at Sukkur. The current campus of the university is located in the premises of Government College of Technology (GCT), Qasimpur Colony, Near BCG Chowk, Bahawalpur Road, Multan. A piece of land has been purchased by Government of the Punjab for the construction of new campus is in process. Almost 70% of the construction in Phase-1 is completed.
