Lavet-type stepping motor of a quartz clock. A black rotor sprocket provides the mechanical output. The Lavet-type stepping motor has widespread use as a drive in electro-mechanical clocks [1] and is a special kind of single-phase stepping motor. Both analog and stepped-movement quartz clocks use the Lavet-type stepping motor (see Quartz clock).
An early precision electric clock from the 1920s that uses a synchronous motor. The clock must first be started by spinning the main gear by hand. Above a certain size, synchronous motors cannot self-start. This property is due to rotor inertia; it cannot instantly follow the rotation of the stator's magnetic field.
Some electric clocks have a simple two-pole synchronous motor which runs at one revolution per cycle of power, i.e., 3600 RPM at 60 Hz and 3000 RPM at 50 Hz.
