have two, one is for the small lawns it is an Earthway 2400 stainless steel broadcast spreader - 5 years and no problems. For large areas I use a Jrco Electric Broadcast spreader (pricey at $800.) and it is a life saver on large lawns, construction is Poly, Stainless, Aluminum and Cast Iron, 4 years and no problems.
The frame was not stainless. I did not like the spread pattern either. The pattern was narrow and I left strips and skips if I was not real careful. I have lescos now and like them very much. Make sure your spreader is stainless and has a wide spread pattern that overlaps at 10-12 foot spacings. I try and not put more than 60 pounds in my spreader.

Painted--so rust could be a problem. Make sure your fertilizer is not too lumpy. Solid rod hopper opener is best. Flexible cable type is cheap. For about a hundred dollars more you can get the stainless steel version. F80S. 80 pounds version. Interchangeable holes for coarse or fine material.
That will destroy the spreader. Best way to level lawns with sand is to drop very small piles and plan on covering about 10 sq ft with every 50 lb bag. Spread it with the flat of a rake. They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin 1775.
I used a Scotts (Andersons) stainless steel spreader for 20 years. Not sure, I think Prizelawn built the Scotts (Andersons) spreaders for years in Ohio--but 3 years ago sold the equipment to Earthway--who now makes them.
Write down your actual spreader settings, the details of the material applied (annual rye grass seed, Scotts crabgrass preemergence 0-0-7, Scotts Southern Turf Weed and Feed 29-0-10, etc), the approximate speed that you walked and the turf conditions (wet grass, just cut, right before it rained etc).
I am planning on doing some experimenting with Eurea 46-0-0 and see what happens with it as my previous feeding 5 weeks ago was basic triple 10. You realize of course that .63 pounds of Urea per 1,000 sq ft is only 1/4 lb. Nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft. As a winterizer application on cool season turfgrass, 1/4 lb of N is a joke.
Scotts holds enough for about 1000 sqft. Suited for areas not reachable with larger equipment. I added a plastic edge-guard to mine--for those tight or narrow areas , medians, sidewalks (when using salt). Rotate the handle backwards to narrow the pattern. PowerSpreader is a Lesco push spreader (which is a good one) with a motor & hydro gears. If one can afford the extra expense, it's well worth it. I use one to broadcast fertilizer on lawns up to 1 acre. It is best suited for .5 acre and under.
