A county highway (also county road or county route; usually abbreviated CH or CR) is a road in the United States and in the Canadian province of Ontario that is designated and/or maintained by the county highway department. Route numbering can be determined by each county alone, by mutual agreement among counties, or by a statewide pattern.
The route splits off from U.S. Route 41 at Bryn Mawr Avenue by Lake Michigan on the north side of the city. US 14 then recrosses US 41 and eventually exits the city as Caldwell Avenue. U.S. Route 54 (US 54) in Illinois is a 23.9-mile-long (38.5 km) east–west highway that travels from the Champ Clark Bridge on the Missouri state line to I-72/US 36/IL 107 south of Griggsville. At its greatest extent, US 54 used to continue east to Springfield , then northeast to Onarga , and then north all the way to Downtown Chicago .
Highway 51 was fully paved in 1947. It bears no relation to the second incarnation of Highway 51, near Rondeau Provincial Park. Peel Regional Road 50, Queen Street: Steeles Avenue (corner boundary with the City of Toronto), continues southeast as Albion Road Highway 9 (Boundary with Simcoe County, continues as Simcoe CR 50)
Illinois's state route numbers originated in 1918 as State Bond Issues 1 through 46, used to finance the new roads. The numbers of the bond issues were then used to mark the highway routes along the way. Another series of bond issues were authorized in 1924 (47–185) and again were used to mark the roads they paid for.
