Title page of the first edition of the score, Vienna 1799. The three String Trios, Op. 9 were composed by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1797–98. He published them in Vienna in 1799, with a dedication to his patron Count Johann Georg von Browne (1767–1827). [1]
I. Allegro con brio [ edit ] The first movement follows the sonata allegro format of the classical period , and borrows thematically from Beethoven's Piano Quartet No. 3 in C major , [ 5 ] WoO 36, from a decade earlier.
This sonata consists of three movements: Allegro con brio; Adagio con molto sentimento d'affetto – Attacca; Allegro – Allegro fugato; While this sonata is more accessible and conventionally structured, the concluding fugue prefigures the fugal finales of the Hammerklavier Sonata and the late string quartets.
The opening of the movement begins in a way that seemingly contradicts the allegro con spirito marking. Violin II, viola, and cello sustain a tonic chord while the first violin plays the melody (the "sunrise" motif) on top. In measure 7, the same instruments sustain a dominant seventh chord while the first violin again plays a rising solo on top.
Mysterious sotto voce strings open the final Allegro con spirito, again in sonata form. The full orchestra suddenly announces the arrival of the main theme, unveiling "...the blazing sunrise of the most athletic and ebulliently festive movement Brahms ever wrote". [6]
