In comparison with towns bordering Sint-Niklaas such as Waasmunster, Belsele and Temse, Nieuwkerken is a much younger village. It was first mentioned in 1143, and became independent from Sint-Niklaas on in 1294. [2] On 1 January 1977, it became a part of the larger Sint-Niklaas area. [3]

The eclectic [1] building was commissioned in 1878 by Alfons Janssens, a textile manufacturer and later politician of the Catholic Party. Pieter Van Kerkhove, who had also already drawn up the design of the new town hall of Sint-Niklaas, was the architect.

At the creation of Belgium in 1831, there were 2,739 municipalities in the country, which had fallen to 2,663 municipalities by 1961. Following a series of decisions and actions, carried out in 1975, 1983 and 2019, the fusion of the Belgian municipalities reduced the national total to 581 municipalities.
Production was mainly focused on flax and wheat till 1850. This changed in the twentieth century when the emphasis was put on food, construction, and textile. Since the second world war, Belsele evolved to a green, residential area. Most of the people work in Sint-Niklaas and Antwerp (fewer). The hamlet Puivelde forms a separate entity.
