The Chemical Institute of Canada is a Canadian professional umbrella organization for researchers and professionals in the field of chemistry.It was founded in 1921 as the Canadian Institute of Chemistry until it merged with other groups in 1945 under its current name.
The Chemical Institute of Canada Medal or CIC Medal is the highest award that the Chemical Institute of Canada confers. Awarded annually since 1951, it is given to "a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the science of chemistry or chemical engineering in Canada". [1]

Lautens was made a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2001. [4] He is currently the AstraZeneca Professor of Organic Chemistry (1998–present) and was an NSERC/Merck Frosst Industrial Research Chair (2003–2013). In 2009, he was an Alexander von Humboldt awardee. In 2013, he was awarded the Chemical Institute of Canada's CIC Medal. [21]
The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) is a professional organization for chemical engineers. [1] AIChE was established in 1908 to distinguish chemical engineers as professionals independent of chemists and mechanical engineers. Currently, AIChE has over 60,000 members from over 110 countries [2] or 40,000 members from 93 countries.
In 2023, he was inducted as a fellow of the Royal Society [17] and has been a fellow of Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Society of Chemistry since 1999 and 2016, respectively. He is also a member of the Chemical Institute of Canada, Canadian Association of Physicists, American Physical Society, and Optical Society of America.
