The programme was involved in the Robert Chung Affair in 2000, a political scandal which Dr Chung had spoken out on the programme being presurred by the then chief executive and university's chancellor Tung Chee-hwa through the university's vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellor from publishing the approval rates of the government, leading to an investigation panel being set up by the university.
Eliot Hall was opened in 1914 as the university's second residential hall and was named after Sir Charles Eliot, the first vice-chancellor of the university.It was used as a relief hospital during the Second World War as additional support for the nearby Queen Mary Hospital.
The Main Building was built with donations by Sir Hormusjee Naorojee Mody and construction began in 1910. Old Halls is a collective name of Lugard Hall, Eliot Hall and May Hall given in 1969. It was closed in 1992. The first residential hall under the university's direct management was Lugard Hall, which opened in 1913 and was originally named University Hall (not to be confused with the later University Hall purchased in 1956).
