When Laverne & Shirley were just out of high school, it made sense for them to room together. But each season was a new year and year after year, they’re still rooming together. Shirley could definitely marry Carmine. In one season, they even bought a car together.

Networks tended to "own" a particular night. Many TVs still didn't have remotes. Happy Days caught on in the 1970s as a nostalgic look back on the "innocent" 1950s. My mother, who was a teenager in the 1950s, absolutely loved the show. Laverne & Shirley was a spin off of Happy Days and was shown on the same night, Tuesdays.
The move from Milwaukee to Burbank, Carmine's departure for Broadway (to star in "Hair"), the addition of new characters, and finally, Cindy Williams departure to have a baby, subsequent lawsuit, and release from her contract changed the dynamic so that it was no longer "Laverne & Shirley," but "The Penny Marshall Show."

With Laverne & Shirley going into its eighth season, I liked the idea of a new challenge. I received encouragement from friends, including Jim Brooks and Steven Spielberg. Steven compared directing to babysitting. He jokingly pointed out that I already sat on the phone with half of Hollywood at night, dispensing advice. Why not get paid for it?
