The Kappa Alpha Society (ΚΑ), founded in 1825, was the progenitor of the modern fraternity system in North America.It is considered to be the oldest national, secret, Greek-letter social fraternity and was the first of the fraternities which would eventually become known as the Union Triad that pioneered the North American system of social fraternities.

Union Triad. The Union Triad is a group of the three Greek-letter social fraternities in North America that were founded at Union College in Schenectady, New York: the Kappa Alpha Society (established 1825), the Sigma Phi Society (1827) and the Delta Phi (1827). No formal organization exists.
The Sigma Phi badge is a monogram with a jeweled Σ directly over a Φ that is either plain or chased. [2] It was designed by Charles N. Rowley, founder of the Beta of New York chapter. [4] In 1879, Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities stated that the badge was royal purple. [2] Since 1879, the badge has been produced mainly in gold.
