The county was created by the Michigan Legislature from part of Michilimackinac County in 1840, named Kaykakee County [5] after a Sauk Indian Chief. It was renamed Clare County in 1843 after County Clare in Ireland. The county was administered by a succession of other Michigan counties prior to the organization of county government in 1871.

Brockway Mountain is a 1,320-foot-tall (400 m) volcanic landform on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan about five miles (8.0 km) west of Copper Harbor. [11] The top of the mountain is 720 feet (219 m) above the level of Lake Superior. [12] The peak was named for Daniel D. Brockway, local pioneer settler, postmaster and state road commissioner.

M-183 is a north–south state trunkline highway in the Upper Peninsula of the US state of Michigan. It serves Fayette State Park as an access route from US Highway 2 (US 2). The highway runs through rural farmlands of the Garden Peninsula and next to Big Bay de Noc, a bay of Lake Michigan. The community at Fayette dates back to the 1860s.
