Manuel Zacarías Monsalve Benavides (b. Coronel, Chile, July 9, 1965) is a Chilean surgeon and politician. A member of the Socialist Party (PS) from 1992 to 2024, he served as its General Secretary in 2010. [2] From March 2022 to October 2024, he was Chile’s Undersecretary of the Interior under President Gabriel Boric. [3]
Born in Medellín, Monsalve began his career with local side Independiente Medellín at the age of four, following in the footsteps of his elder brother. Monsalve was promoted to the reserves in June 2014, also making the pre-season with the first team. In March 2016, after the injuries of Diego Godín, José Giménez and Stefan Savić, he was promoted to the main squad. [3] On 2 April 2016, Monsalve made his professional debut, starting in a 5–1 La Liga home routing over Real Betis. [4]
