Major Sidney Theodore Freedman, played by Allan Arbus, is a psychiatrist summoned in cases of mental health problems. In the M*A*S*H 30th Anniversary Special that aired on Fox in 2002, Arbus was the only non-regular cast member to be featured on the special. Freedman's first appearance was in the episode "Radar's Report", as Milton Freedman.
Psychiatrist Sidney Freedman (Allan Arbus) is having trouble working after one of his patients, whom he thought he had helped, dies by suicide.He believes "there's something special" about the 4077th, so he goes to a poker game there one night and decides to remain for several weeks, to work through his feelings.
The film begins with Hawkeye Pierce being treated at a psychiatric hospital by Sidney Freedman. It is revealed he suffered a PTSD-induced nervous breakdown while working in the operating room. He tells Freedman about a recent beach outing by a busload of camp staff. They picked up some refugees and wounded soldiers on their return home.
Pierce then calls Dr. Sidney Freedman to ask him to come to the 4077th to treat Corporal Travis. Dr. Dr. Freedman tells Pierce that he is too busy and recommends a course of action that Pierce should follow.

Captain Sam Pak and Major Sidney Freedman (Allan Arbus) arrive at the 4077th for a "conference" that is actually a marathon poker game in the Swamp, also attended by Henry Blake, Hawkeye, Trapper, and Klinger. The game is interrupted several times during the night.
