Finnish Sport Museum has a pair of footwear from the 1940s with the three stripes by Finnish athletic footwear brand Karhu Sports. [3] According to another source, the three stripes mark was created by the Adidas company founder, Adolf Dassler, and first used on footwear in 1949, when Adidas was founded. [1]
In 1952, Karhu sold the "three stripes" trademark it had been using to a then little-known German brand Adidas for the equivalent of 1,600 euros and two bottles of whiskey. [5] [9] In the 1960s Karhu began to use the M-logo in its place. [8] The 'M' (that comes from "Mestari" which means "champion" in Finnish) is still in use on Karhu shoes. [4]
[citation needed] By 1966 Le Coq Sportif was the biggest sports brand in France and that same year the company signed a deal with Adidas to produce the three stripes clothing products in France. Terms of the contract ruled that Adidas focused on footwear while LCS took over of textile products. [7]
Thom Browne long used a three-bar design on its clothing, only changing it to the four-stripe design after Adidas objected in 2007. [37] Adidas sued Thom Browne's brand in 2021, claiming Thom Browne's four-bar and "Grosgrain" stripe patterns on its shoes and high-end activewear violated its three-stripe trademark rights. [38]
