Brixton library in 1905 According to the Survey of London (1956), "the architect was Sidney R.J. Smith, and the builders were F. and H.F. Higgs. A brass tablet in the entrance hall records that the garden in front of the library was given in 1905 by Amy, Lady Tate in fulfilment of a wish of her husband Sir Henry Tate".
The Minet Library is a public library in the London Borough of Lambeth in South London. The library opened in 1890 and currently operates as a self-service library, with limited staff, as a result of cuts to funding. The building was home to Lambeth Archives for 133 years, however this facility moved to Brixton Hill in 2024. [1]
Mr Sidney R. J. Smith was employed as the architect for the Streatham and Lambeth Central (Brixton) Libraries. He also designed the Tate Gallery. Tate was appointed chairman of the commissioners for the library in 1883, and remained in office until his death. Streatham was the only library established under his control.
