The rank did not exist prior to 1805, as the admiral commanding the Red squadron was called Admiral of the Fleet. Uniquely, the ranks of the Soviet Naval Infantry, Soviet Naval Aviation, and the other ground services remained army-styled similar to their Red Army counterparts but the rank insignia became uniform.
