"Cuyahoga" is a song by R.E.M. from their 1986 album Lifes Rich Pageant. It was written primarily by R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry , but credited to the whole band. [ 1 ] It is one of R.E.M.'s earliest environmentally conscious songs, along with the album's lead single, " Fall on Me ".
According to the film's director, David S. Ward, he chose the song because it was the only one he knew of that was about Cleveland, Ohio, which is where the movie takes place. The chorus of the song, "burn on, big river, burn on," refers to when the Cuyahoga River caught fire due to pollution in 1969.
The song was covered by the Presidents of the United States of America and used on The Drew Carey Show as a theme.
