No clue about the inspection, but don't EVER let your tags expire. This happened to us once on a car we rarely drive, it costs us $350 in fines to get the car re-registered. All they do is inspections and seem to fail a lot of vehicles for minor things based on their opinion such as that windshield wiper is a little worn, tires a little worn out, windshield has a crack but doesn't obstruct the view, etc. Things that are not obvious failures such as a lightbulb being out that is a fact.
In NC there is a $6.25 inspection fee that the state charges and up to $23.75 that the individual shop/station can charge for their labor. You will always pay the shop fee, pass or fail, but you only pay the $6.25 state fee if you pass.
I got an inspection done and they told me that the filter thing on my car did not pass inspection and it would cost $918 to fix so I could pass the inspection. I have NO money (single mom in school). I had a speeding ticket and also a ticket for not updating my inspection that expired in March.
And if you're driving the car with an expired inspection, it also means the registration has expired (under the new system) so you'll get a ticket for that too. 08-27-2009, 07:44 AM Asheville Native
