In 1812, Maryland state began to raise money for a Free School Fund by taxing the renewal of bank charters (Chapter 79, Acts of 1812), and in 1864 appointed Libertus Van Bokkelen as the first Maryland State Superintendent of Public Instruction. [1]
The district is governed by a six-person Board of Education, five of which are elected by the public in non-partisan elections, and a student elected by the Calvert Association of Student Councils. The school district currently has 4 high schools , 6 middle schools , and 13 elementary schools .
She was first appointed to the District 4 seat in 2014, ran unopposed in 2016 and won the 2020 general election and has been vice chair and chair of the Board of Education.
The district had 102,375 registered voters as of October 17, 2020, of whom 23,301 (22.8%) were registered as unaffiliated, 46,243 (45.2%) were registered as Republicans, 31,657 (30.9%) were registered as Democrats, and 455 (0.4%) were registered to other parties.
