CHRISTINE, Texas [August 19, 2020] – San Miguel Electric Cooperative (SMEC) has announced that North American Construction Group Ltd. (NACG) will be operating its lignite mine, which provides fuel for its power plant that produces 391 megawatts of affordable, reliable electricity for nine member cooperatives across 42 South Texas counties.
Funds could be used to overhaul San Miguel’s current lignite coal operations and transition to a cleaner source of energy. If awarded the funding, San Miguel plans to convert its lignite operation to a 400 megawatt (MW) solar generation plant and a 200 MW battery energy storage system.

San Miguel Lignite Mine Christine, Texas. On January 1, 2011, Kiewit was awarded a contract to provide management services to mine and deliver lignite from the San Miguel Mine. Approximately 3.3 million tons of lignite coal is delivered to the adjacent 400-MW San Miguel Electric Cooperative, Inc. power plant, which is the owner of the mine.
