The Grange Insurance Audubon Center is located near the western edge of the park, at 505 W. Whittier St. The 18,000 sq ft (1,700 m 2) building is the first Audubon center built in close proximity to a downtown area. It was built along with the park, opening in August 2009 at a cost of $14.5 million.
On November 30, 2021, the first 62-acre section of the park opened to the public and allows for biking, hiking, fishing, rock climbing, canoeing, paddle-boarding, floating boardwalks, a zipline, and a sledding hill. The park is situated within a larger development which will have apartments, townhomes, condominiums, office space and retail. [21]

Headlands Beach State Park is at the northern terminus of State Route 44 and the Buckeye Trail. [5] The park is between the Mentor Marsh and the Grand River.It is next to Fairport Harbor Coast Guard station and a Morton Salt mine [6] and abuts two other protected areas, Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve to the east and Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve to the west.
