Tinker Air Force Base is named in honor of Major General Clarence L. Tinker. [2] An Osage from Pawhuska, Oklahoma, he received his wings in 1921. [3] He was a graduate of Wentworth Military Academy who went on to become the first major general of Native American descent in U.S. Army history.

In September 1985, the 130th and 360th Squadrons were consolidated into a single unit. The consolidated squadron was redesignated the 970th Airborne Air Control Squadron and activated at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, on 15 March 1996, becoming the first Air Combat Command associate flying squadron.
