Avoirdupois (/ ˌ æ v ər d ə ˈ p ɔɪ z, ˌ æ v w ɑːr dj uː ˈ p w ɑː /; [1] abbreviated avdp.) [2] is a measurement system of weights that uses pounds and ounces as units. [ 3 ] [ 4 ] It was first commonly used in the 13th century AD and was updated in 1959.
Avoirdupois is a system of mass based on a pound of 16 ounces, while Troy weight is the system of mass where 12 troy ounces equals one troy pound. The symbol g 0 is used to denote standard gravity in order to avoid confusion with the (upright) g symbol for gram.
This template is intended to allow entry of imperial weights (Avoirdupois), measured in tons, hundredweights, quarters and/or pounds (ton, cwt, qr and/or lb) and provide a conversion into pounds and into tonnes (metric tons) or kilograms (if the first parameter is blank or zero).
The avoirdupois units of mass and weight differ for units larger than a pound (lb). The British imperial system uses a stone of 14 lb, a long hundredweight of 112 lb and a long ton of 2,240 lb. The stone is not a measurement of weight used in the US. The US customary system uses the short hundredweight of 100 lb and short ton of 2,000 lb.

The troy pound (lb t) consists of twelve troy ounces [15] and thus is 5 760 grains (373.241 72 grams). (An avoirdupois pound is approximately 21.53% heavier at 7 000 grains (453.592 37 grams), and consists of sixteen ...
The pound or pound-mass is a unit of mass used in both the British imperial and United States customary systems of measurement.Various definitions have been used; the most common today is the international avoirdupois pound, which is legally defined as exactly 0.453 592 37 kilograms, and which is divided into 16 avoirdupois ounces. [1]
The Spanish pound (Spanish: libra) was 460 g. [12] The Spanish ounce (Spanish onza) was 1 ⁄ 16 of a pound, i.e. 28.75 g. [13] It was further subdivided into 16 adarmes (each 1.8 grams). For pharmaceutical use, the Greek dracma was used, subdividing the Spanish ounce into 8 (3.6 grams), due to being equivalent to 1 ⁄ 12 of an avoirdupois ounce.
The metric ton is the name used for the tonne (1000 kg, 2 204.622 62 lb), which is about 1.6% less than the long ton. The US customary system also includes the kip, equivalent to 1,000 pounds of force, which is also occasionally used as a unit of weight of 1,000 pounds (usually in engineering contexts).
