Mariposa (/ ˌ m ær ɪ ˈ p oʊ z ə,-s ə / ⓘ; [6] Spanish for "Butterfly") is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in and the county seat of Mariposa County, California, United States. [7] The population was 1,526 at the 2020 census. [3]
He was a member of the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors from 1988 to 1992, serving as chairman in 1991. He first ran for Congress in 1992 after his home in Mariposa was shifted to the 19th District, and lost in the Republican primary to Fresno businessman Tal Cloud. [6] Radanovich won the Republican primary in 1994.
It was known to the local Native American Miwok in their language as Pallachun ("a good place to stay"). [7] The origin of the word Wawona is not known. [8] [9] [10] A popular story claims Wawō'na was the Miwok word for "big tree", or for "hoot of the owl", a bird considered the sequoia trees' spiritual guardian.
