Pōhutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa), [2] also known as the New Zealand Christmas tree, [3] [4] or iron tree, [5] is a coastal evergreen tree in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae, that produces a brilliant display of red (or occasionally orange, yellow [6] or white [7]) flowers, each consisting of a mass of stamens.
Landing at the beach at what is now Howick's Cockle Bay, he made his tuhi, or mark, on a pohutukawa tree situated on the foreshore, using karamea, a red ochre. The pohutukawa tree of the story still stands today, although the mark has since gone. [1] Te Tuhi has been exhibiting in Pakuranga for over 40 years. [3]

Kawau Island is in the Hauraki Gulf, close to the north-eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand.At its closest point it lies 1.4 km (0.87 mi) off the coast of the Northland Peninsula, just south of Tāwharanui Peninsula, and about 8 km (5.0 mi) by sea journey from Sandspit Wharf, and shelters Kawau Bay to the north-east of Warkworth.
