The Fox Valley Mall is a 1,500,000-square-foot (140,000 m 2) enclosed mall, opened and completed in 1975. Sears and Marshall Field's opened first, followed by JCPenney , Lord & Taylor and 150 other shops and services. [ 3 ]
In 2013, it was announced that Sears would be closing in 2014. Sears had operated in Champaign continuously since 1928, and had been an original anchor at the mall's 1975 opening. [5] The store was demolished. Dick's Sporting Goods and Field & Stream built on that space in October 2015.
The early 1980s saw slower expansion, with just two store locations in Illinois added, one in October 1980 at Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee, and one in 1981 at Stratford Square Mall in Bloomingdale. Another Texas store opened at the Dallas Galleria, in Dallas, Texas, in 1982.
Sears executive Emory Williams was the first president of Homart. Warren G. Skoning was appointed president in 1967, [ 15 ] and elected as chairman in 1974. [ 16 ] Also serving as vice-president of real estate development for Sears, Skoning was involved in the development of the Sears Tower .
The May Department Stores Company, through its subsidiary May Centers, Inc., built the mall [3] in 1974 with Famous-Barr, JCPenney, and Sears. Stix Baer & Fuller built a store on the mall site in 1979. [4] This store became Dillard's in 1984. It was sold to The Hahn Company in 1989. [5] A food court was added in the early 1990s. [3]
Hawthorn Mall, formerly Westfield Hawthorn, is a shopping mall in Vernon Hills, Illinois. It was developed by Urban Investment and Development Co, and anchor stores Sears and Marshall Field & Company (now Macy's ) as part of New Century Town, a community with 5,000 condominiums and townhomes planned at the time.
