The Mount Thielsen Wilderness is a wilderness area located on and around Mount Thielsen in the southern Cascade Range of Oregon in the United States. It is located within the Deschutes, Umpqua, and Fremont–Winema national forests. [1]
Mount Thielsen (Klamath: hisc’akwaleeʔas), [4] is an extinct shield volcano in the Oregon High Cascades, near Mount Bailey. Because eruptive activity ceased 250,000 years ago, glaciers have heavily eroded the volcano's structure, creating precipitous slopes and a horn-like peak.
[3] [2] The low point of the trail is at Bridge of the Gods (elevation 220 ft (67 m)), and the high point of the trail is on a saddle north of Mount Thielsen (elevation 7,560 ft (2,304 m)). Altogether, there is 62,840 feet (19,154 m) of elevation gain and 58,780 feet (17,916 m) of elevation loss on a north-to-south trip.
Mount Thielsen is a 55,100-acre (223 km 2) wilderness area, 21,593 acres (87.38 km 2) of which is located inside the National Forest. (The rest lies in either Winema National Forest or Deschutes National Forest.)
Mount Bailey is a relatively young tephra cone and shield volcano in the Cascade Range, located on the opposite side of Diamond Lake from Mount Thielsen in southern Oregon, United States. Bailey consists of a 2,000-foot (610 m)-high main cone on top of an old basaltic andesite shield volcano .
