Hume was born on 26 April 1711, as David Home, in a tenement on the north side of Edinburgh's Lawnmarket.He was the second of two sons born to Catherine Home (née Falconer), daughter of Sir David Falconer of Newton, Midlothian and his wife Mary Falconer (née Norvell), [14] and Joseph Home of Chirnside in the County of Berwick, an advocate of Ninewells.

George Hume was born in 1697 in Wedderburn Castle, Berwickshire, Scotland, into a distinguished noble family with deep roots in Scottish history.His father, Sir George Hume of Wedderburn, was the 3rd Baronet of Wedderburn who married his cousin Lady Margaret, daughter of Sir Patrick Hume,1st Baronet of Lumsden. The fact that Hume's "History of Great Britain" was very quickly renamed "History of England" is indicative of a change of focus that happened follow the Treaty of Union (1707) with England. Thereafter, a particularly Scottish historiography languished - whether in a romanticised nostalgia for a lost identity, or in continuing religious polemics.
The design may have inspired later 'Maps of World History' such as the HistoMap by John B. Sparks, which chronicles four thousand years of world history in a graphic way similar to the enlarging and contracting nation streams presented on Adam's chart. Sparks added the innovation of using a logarithmic scale for the presentation of history.
Hume's essay is the first known establishment of the concept of the Price-Specie Flow Mechanism. Perhaps still the best, [ 3 ] it was cited by Paul Krugman and John Maynard Keynes on one end of the political spectrum and by Austrian economists on the other.
