Arenal Volcano National Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal) is a Costa Rican national park in the central part of the country, part of the Arenal Huetar Norte Conservation Area. The park encompasses the Arenal Volcano , the most active in the country, which was believed to be dormant until a major eruption in 1968.
El Silencio is a village and nature park in the Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, in the hills overlooking the west shore of Lake Arenal. It is a very good tropical forest area for viewing birds and monkeys, and also contains the active Arenal Volcano. It has several kilometres of trails for hiking and photography.
The jewel of the national park is the Tenorio Volcano, from which it derives its name. The volcano was made part of the National Park in 1995 and is located about 26 miles northeast of Fortuna in the Guanacaste Province. The Rio Celeste appears blue due to the emission of sulphur from the volcano and precipitation of calcium carbonate.
It lies on the flanks of Arenal Volcano, which it uses to heat its springs. The geothermal springs have a range between 72 and 105°F (22-41°C). [2] The resort was founded in 1991 by Costa Rican architect Jaime Mikowski, [3] taking two years to develop the resort, and was opened in April 1993. [4]

Arenal is often cited by scientists as being in the top 10 or top 20 of the world's most active volcanoes. [5] [6] [7] La Fortuna is less than 10 kilometres (6 mi) from the 5,480 feet (1,670 m) peak of Arenal and less than 20 kilometres (12 mi) from the Arenal Volcano National Park entrance, which is west of the peak, whereas La Fortuna is east of the peak.
The site contains the Miravalles Volcano, which is still active although the last recorded eruption was only of steam vents in 1946. On 5 June 2019, it was created by allocating 43 square kilometres (17 sq mi) from Miravalles Protected Zone as declared by Executive Decree 41768-MINAE, [1] it became the twenty ninth national park of Costa Rica.
