The first City Technology College opened was The City Technology College, Kingshurst in 1988, which was later converted to an academy in 2008. The original intention was to improve education inside cities, but the programme was hampered by the refusal of local authorities in the targeted areas to provide suitable school sites.

Emmanuel College is a secondary school and sixth form college (years 7-13) based in Gateshead, England. It was founded in 1990 as a City Technology College , i.e. a secondary school which is partly funded by donations from business donors who remain involved in management of the college.
As of 2021, it had a 100% four-year graduation rate. [5] Located on the campus of City College, HSMSE is small, with a total of approximately 485 students in ninth to twelfth grade. The school is located on four floors of the CCNY campus' Baskerville Hall. Class sizes are small, with an average of approximately 24 students per class. [6]
The John Cabot City Technology College (CTC) became the John Cabot Academy in 2007. [1] The present Academy is independent of local authority control, but enjoys a close relationship with both South Gloucestershire and Bristol Local Authorities.
