A Wolof speaker, recorded in Taiwan. Wolof (/ ˈ w oʊ l ɒ f / WOH-lof; [2] Wolof làkk, وࣷلࣷفْ لࣵکّ) is a Niger–Congo language spoken by the Wolof people in much of the West African subregion of Senegambia that is split between the countries of Senegal, The Gambia and Mauritania.
Wolof (/ ˈ w ɒ l ɒ f /) is a language of Senegal, the Gambia, and Mauritania, and the native language of the Wolof people. Like the neighbouring languages Serer and Fula , it belongs to the Senegambian branch of the Niger–Congo language family .
The Pulaar counting system is base five (a quinary-decimal system) which is similar to the surrounding Niger-Congo languages. The number 7, for example, uses the prefix of d͡ʒoj (5) and the suffix ɗiɗi (2) becoming d͡ʒeeɗiɗi (5+2). [8] Other languages that use this system in West Africa include Pular, Wolof, Sereer-Sine and East Limba.
There are also additional Kosraean communities found outside of Micronesia. [2] The native language of people of Kosrae is officially known as Kosraean. Like many indigenous languages in Micronesia, schoolchildren often use Kosraean for instructions between grades 1–3 and later use both Kosraean and English in grades 4–5. [3]
