A post office called Marion has been in operation since 1880. [6] The city was named for Francis Marion, an officer in the American Revolutionary War. [7] Marion is home to a sizeable Amish community, who settled there in 1995. As of 2024, the town had 575 Amish residents divided between five church districts. [8]

McNair signed into law an act creating Francis Marion College, effective July 1, 1970. The newly created Francis Marion College initially enrolled 907 students from 23 of South Carolina's 46 counties.
Francis Marion was born in Berkeley County, Province of South Carolina around 1732. His father Gabriel Marion was a Huguenot who emigrated to the Thirteen Colonies from France at some point prior to 1700 due to the Edict of Fontainebleau and became a slaveowning planter. [3]
