Patrick L. O'Daniel Unit (formerly the Mountain View Unit) is a Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison housing female offenders in Gatesville, Texas. The unit, with about 97 acres (39 ha) of land, is located 4 miles (6.4 km) north of central Gatesville on Farm to Market Road 215 . [ 1 ]
It does not include federal prisons or county jails, nor does it include the North Texas State Hospital; though the facility houses those classified as "criminally insane" (such as Andrea Yates) the facility is under the supervision of the Texas Department of State Health Services. A prison farm (also known as a penal farm) is a large correctional facility where penal labor convicts work — legally or illegally — on a farm (in the wide sense of a productive unit), usually for manual labor, largely in the open air, such as in agriculture, logging, quarrying, and mining.
The prison is located on Texas State Highway 36, between Farm to Market Road 215 and Farm to Market Road 929. The 1,317 acres (533 ha) unit, which opened in November 1995, is co-located with the Christina Crain Unit , the Hilltop Unit , the Patrick O'Daniel Unit , and the Woodman Unit. [ 1 ]
