Esplanade is a neighbourhood of Central Kolkata, located at the heart of city with being the city's Central business district and major transport junction. This is a conventional esplanade because the Ganga river (), also known as Hooghly river, flows nearby and it is adjacent to the large fields of Maidan extending up to Fort William.
The service from Dum Dum to Tollygunge started in 1995, with Mahatma Gandhi Road metro station, opening in 1996. Ballygunge Circular Road which was renamed as Promotesh Barua Sarani (PIN Kolkata 700019), after the legendary actor and doyen of Bengali Cinema, is one of the most important roads which runs through the upscale part of Ballygunge in South Kolkata. [1]
The master plan had already identified the East-West corridor back in 1971. [7] It was planned to connect Howrah Railway Station with the Salt Lake region. [8] As per the feasibility investigation for the corridor conducted by Pacific Consultant International Group in January 2004; their plan report proposed the route and tubular structures to be beneath the Hooghly River.

The 'broad gravelled walk' on the west side of that portion is the Red Road, constructed in 1820.
