According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 39.3 square miles (101.8 km 2), of which 39.1 square miles (101.2 km 2) is land and 0.19 square miles (0.5 km 2), or 0.53%, is water. The bridge was closed to traffic in the 1960s, and was bypassed by a concrete bridge alongside. In 1976 some repair work was done by the Vermont Naval Reserve and volunteers from the town. But even that work was not enough and the bridge was closed to even foot traffic. In 1987 the firm of Graton Associates was hired to rehabilitate the bridge.
