Elyria (/ ə ˈ l ɪər i ə / ə-LEER-ee-ə [6]) is a city in, and the county seat of, Lorain County, Ohio, United States, located at the forks of the Black River in Northeast Ohio 23 miles (37 km) southwest of Cleveland. [7] As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 52,656. [8] It is a principal city in the Cleveland metropolitan area.
Pike Island Lock and Dam is the fifth lock and dam on the Ohio River, located in Yorkville, Ohio 84 miles downstream of Pittsburgh. There are two locks, one for commercial barge traffic that's 1,200 feet long by 110 feet wide, and the auxiliary lock is 600 feet long by 110 feet wide.

In 1805, two years after Ohio became a state, the federal government finalized treaties with local Native Americans. The reserve was surveyed and parceled into rough 5-mile-square (8.0 km) blocks (smaller than the typical 6-mile-square (9.7 km) townships in the midwestern United States).
