The conversion of one of these houses into Locke's Tavern in 1825 brought some additional growth along Main Street, resulting in the construction of several Greek Revival houses. The most significant growth in the area came in the second half of the 19th century, when a number of Queen Anne, Shingle style, and Colonial Revival houses were built.
It is centered on the crossing the Shawsheen River by Andover Street, and includes buildings on High Street, Center Street, and other adjacent roads on both sides of the river. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. [1] Ballardvale was the first planned mill community in Andover.
Construction began in 2010 for 1,200 new homes on agricultural land near to the hamlet. [3] By September 2019 1158 homes were occupied. After 2017 in a further phase of development, housing was built beneath Andover Down, and relatively close to Harewood forest. A torch sculpture was completed in the village in 2024 although this proved divisive.
Pan Am Railways freight trains also run regularly through the village. There is a gated railroad crossing at the intersection of Andover and Tewksbury Streets. Interstate 93 passes through Ballardvale, with one exit serving the village directly at Dascomb Road. This exit also serves Andover proper and Tewksbury.
One residential area was primarily north and west of this central area, and it provided housing for the upper level executives of the Company. The third area was east and south of the industrial area, spilling across the railroad tracks and river, where middle class worker housing was provided.
