Renewable natural gas (RNG), also known as biomethane, is a renewable fuel and biogas which has been upgraded to a quality similar to fossil natural gas and has a methane concentration of 90% or greater. [1]
Biological methanation in combination with an arbitrary carbon dioxide source (ex-situ process) In a separate methanation plant the hydrogen is converted into methane together with carbon dioxide and then fed into the gas grid (stand-alone solution). Biological methanation in a pressurized reactor vessel (in-situ process).

The purpose of industrial biogas production is the collection of biomethane, usually for fuel. Industrial biogas is produced either; As landfill gas (LFG), which is produced by the decomposition of biodegradable waste inside a landfill due to chemical reactions and microbes, or; As digested gas, produced inside an anaerobic digester.
This allocates biomethane for energy production and prevents a potent greenhouse gas, methane, from being released into the atmosphere. The organic components of wastewater vary vastly. Chemical structures of the organic matter select for specific methanogens to perform anaerobic digestion.
After upgrading with the above-mentioned technologies, the biogas (transformed into biomethane) can be used as vehicle fuel in adapted vehicles. This use is very extensive in Sweden, where over 38,600 gas vehicles exist, and 60% of the vehicle gas is biomethane generated in anaerobic digestion plants.
